How Do You Get in to Research in Materials Engineering?

engineering materials

I’m registered in materials engineering for this fall. I’ve completed my first year of engineering. When I graduate in 3 years I’ll have a BEng in Materials Engineering. Right now I think a ‘dream job’ for me would to be doing cutting edge sort of stuff, researching and helping to create new materials. What do I need to do if I want to accomplish this? I was thinking about taking a joint, Masters of Applied Science degree as well that my school offers. Would this be sufficient?
Thanks for your help.

Higher Ed. would definitely be required to pursue a career in research, at a minimum you will have to get a masters degree. You should really get PhD if you want to do research though. I’m not sure how relevent a MS in applied science would be to materials engineering. An MS in Chem Eng or Materials Eng would probably prepare you better for the type of reseearch you want to do.
