What Cities Are Known for Mechanical Engineering Opportunities?

My fiance and I would like to get married within the next year, but I’m planning on going to graduate school so I need to apply to schools in cities with ample mechanical engineering opportunities so that my future husband, a mechanical engineering major, will be likely to get job offers in the same city. He seems to think that engineers can get jobs anywhere, but I’d still like narrow my search of grad schools for those in cities with ample opportunities for him.

I’m a mechanical engineer. I used to work for Chevron in Texas and now work for Intel in New Mexico so I can speak to my experiences in those states. What is your fiance interested in doing? That will help you pinpoint the right city. There are a lot of opportunities for ME’s in the oil/natural gas industry and it pays REALLY good! If he is interested in that industry, Houston, TX would be the best city for that. Just about EVERY major oil company is based there now. Plus Houston has lots of universities to choose from. If he’s interested in explosives and/or weapons defense, Albuquerque NM is pretty good for that (Honeywell, Northrup Gumman, Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, etc.) – but ONLY if he has an advanced degree and a good GPA, those jobs can be pretty competitive. Although with Albuquerque your options for universities will be limited since it’s a smaller city. If he’s interested in the semi-conductor industry, Austin Texas is a great place for that. A fun city, plus bunches of companies to choose from – and a great school for you. Hope this helps!
Most major cities have opportunities for engineers. I live in the Phoenix area and we have companies like Intel, Honeywell and APS who need engineers. I mention APS because I work for them and I know we’re hiring at Palo Verde. I posted the search page for my company if you’re fiance wants to take a look.
try the web or maybe the university??
