Most major cities have opportunities for engineers. I live in the Phoenix area and we have companies like Intel, Honeywell and APS who need engineers. I mention APS because I work for them and I know we're hiring at Palo Verde. I posted the search page for my company if you're fiance wants to take a look.

I'm a mechanical engineer. I used to work for Chevron in Texas and now work for Intel in New Mexico so I can speak to my experiences in those states. What is your fiance interested in doing? That will help you pinpoint the right city. There are a lot of opportunities for ME's in the oil/natural gas industry and it pays REALLY good! If he is interested in that industry, Houston, TX would be the best city for that. Just about EVERY major oil company is based there now. Plus Houston has lots of universities to choose from. If he's interested in explosives and/or weapons defense, Albuquerque NM is pretty good for that (Honeywell, Northrup Gumman, Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, etc.) - but ONLY if he has an advanced degree and a good GPA, those jobs can be pretty competitive. Although with Albuquerque your options for universities will be limited since it's a smaller city. If he's interested in the semi-conductor industry, Austin Texas is a great place for that. A fun city, plus bunches of companies to choose from - and a great school for you. Hope this helps!
